Questions for our Lackeys & Reviewers

We are just a little excited and would love to share some news… did you know we are fortunate enough to have some Lackeys attending our Whittlesea Mega!! Woo Hoo!

What is a Lackey I hear you ask? Great question!! A Lackey is someone who works and represents Geocaching HQ at events with pride. Some of you might remember that we had Rock Chalk attend St Arnaud Mega in 2019, but this Mega we have more than one Lackey attending… we have FOUR!! Each Lackey plays a different role at HQ and bring different professional expertise to the game we all love behind the scenes. Can you imagine working for Geocaching HQ – how awesome would it be! Our special visitors are…

Maria – (AKprincesswarrior) Learning & Development Manager
Kelli – (ktaylor211) Adventure Lab Support Manager and Scrum Master
Erin – (oceanazul) Product Manager – Adventure Lab
Emily – (MychaelAnne) Revenue Accountant

We are also fortunate to have many reviewers attending the Mega Bunjil (Vic), Diogeones & Penelope (The Netherlands), Jingeri (Qld). Ngaambul (NSW/ACT) Balayang (Tas, WA, NT)/GeoAwareANZ2 and Tchingal (SA)

Given that we have the opportunity to connect with these awesome humans, we thought that it would be great to host a “Meet and Greet” session with the Lackeys and the Reviewers (Sunday 9am) and provide an opportunity to our community to connect and ask questions. To help us prepare for this session, if you could let us know what questions or topics you have that you would like to hear about. Click on the form and register your questions.

  1. wazza9 has a problem with HQ advising me to often that my caches need maintenance due to DNF’s by beginners. I believe that the system used to identify caches for notification is wrong. A lot of my caches are Member status aimed at giving beginners a selection of caches to find without taking out Premium membership. Last week it was GC40KV9 and GC6K2J2 and if an experienced person reviewed the logs rather than letting a computer do their work, they would see that there is probably nothing wrong. In both these cases, I confirmed the caches were in place. It is impossible to get my message across to HQ. I hope this works and a review is undertaken.

  2. wazza9 asks for a review of the rules for the placement of challenge caches in Outback Queensland, New South Wales and other remote areas in all States of Australia. Can the Lackies and Reviewers look at the population density and Geography of Australia and learn that a USA model can NOT be used here please.
Background. A cacher who has tried to place Challenge Caches in Outback Queensland has been knocked back several times now.
Reviewers have reported that to establish a Challenge cache placement in these areas there must be 10 qualified cachers based within 161 Km’s. Given the population distribution in Australia, this requirement will never be achieved restricting this type of cache to within 161 Km’s of the major costal cities even though there are enough cachers that qualify for challenges in these areas and there are local cachers who qualify..
When I placed GC42D6D in 2012 I was told I would never find enough caches who qualified to allow the establishment. At that time I didn’t have to restrict my search to 161 Km’s and was surprised how quickly I came up with a list of cachers that allowed the Reviewer to let it be established. I find that while there are only a small number of finders, it is a cache which is often talked about and has encouraged cachers to visit both these amazing areas. Goldenwattle is one cacher who made a special trip to GZ while undertaking a round Australia trip in 2022.
Can the Lackies and Reviewers look at the Geography of Australia and learn that a USA model can NOT be used here please.
Another question. How can it be a challenge if you have to have a set number of cachers who already qualify? All you are doing is rewarding an established few.
