To help your trip come to life, here are some Transport options.

Travelling to Tasmania

By Air

  • Hobart Airport – serviced by Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin and Air NZ (direct flights from most major Australian cities and Auckland)
  • Launceston Airport – serviced by Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin (direct flights from eastern states)
  • Burnie & Devonport Airports – serviced by Qantas and Rex (direct flights from Melbourne)

By Boat (Spirit of Tasmania)

  • Geelong to Devonport – cars, campers, caravans and trailers (10-12hr sailing time) BOOK EARLY especially if towing or you have a high vehicle (bookings are already open for the event weekend).
    **Make sure you book your return trip or you could potentially get stuck**

    A dedicated booking site has been setup for geocachers by the Spirit of Tasmania and includes a small discount on available passenger fares (use this link).

    You may find that your local automobile club might have better discounts so do your research. RACV members can secure a 10% discount on full passenger fares and accommodation.

Travel within Tasmania

By Car (Travel times to Hobart)

  • From Devonport – via the Bass Highway (towards Launceston) and then onto the Midland Highway from Perth (3.5hrs direct, 265kms – ie not stopping for caches)
    • From Launceston – via the Midland Highway (2.5hrs direct, 205kms)

By Car (Travel times to Sorell)

  • From Hobart – via the Tasman Highway (25mins, 26kms)
  • From Hobart Airport – via the Tasman Highway (12mins, 10kms)

  • Available from most major cities and airports in Tasmania

Public Transport

  • Buses – operate within Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie, along with services connecting a number of locations across Tasmania (See Transport Tasmania). There are a limited number of bus services that run from Hobart to Sorell.
  • Tasmania does not operate a passenger train service
