Well another 2 weeks has passed which means it is now 314 days until the Parkville Event starts and it’s time for a new update.
One of the exciting bits of news that was released when the Parkville Event was first announced was that the very popular Victorian Geocaching Tournament will be back for 2018. Amidst all the other announcements that were going on, it may have been forgotten a little, but that’s right, it’s back! The Tournament was immensely popular in 2016 at The Surf Coast Event and it will be returning, better than ever at Parkville, with a different theme and style, but it will be back nonetheless. There will be further announcements about this later in the year, but look out for the date when registrations open and make sure you get your teams name down to compete.
Geocoin and Pathtag sales continue to come in. The pathtags and both geocoins are selling quite well. Remember though, there is only a limited amount of both the Limited Edition Coin and the pathtags being produced, so if you’ve been eyeing off either of these, make sure you go to our webstore and get your order in before stocks run out.
We would also like to take this opportunity to announce our charity for The Parkville Event 2018. Each year the organizing committee has chosen a charity that is close to at least one of us. In 2015 it was TRY Australia; in 2016 it was the Stroke Foundation; in 2017 it was the Alexandra Primary School. This year, in 2018, Geocaching Victoria would like to announce that the chosen charity is Ronald McDonald House, Parkville. Ronald McDonald House Charities is an independent charity that helps families of seriously ill children. They help keep families together and close to the care their child needs. The Ronald McDonald House in Parkville provides a “home away from home” for the families of seriously ill children being treated at the nearby Royal Children’s Hospital in Parkville. Throughout the lead up and during The Parkville Event 2018, Geocaching Victoria will be raising much needed funds for this very worthwhile charity. So if you see an opportunity arise to help out, all support will be gratefully received.
We’d also like to take this opportunity to highlight that there is still some accommodation available onsite at this MEGA event. Particularly for the interstate and international visitors who may not have anywhere to stay in Melbourne, but also for anyone who might want to enjoy a fun couple of nights hanging around with a bunch of other geocachers during the MEGA event. For those who do stay overnight at GZ, your fun and excitement of this MEGA is not just limited to daylight hours, there will be more things available only to those staying overnight at Urban Camp on the Friday and Saturday night. Rates start from just $130 for the two nights (that’s $65 per night) and you can book your spot, by following this link.
One of the ways that we have always supported our chosen charities is by holding a raffle for the FTF prize of the event. As mentioned earlier, our charity this year is Ronald McDonald House in Parkville and as usual, we will be holding a raffle where you could win the rights to call yourself the FTF of The Parkville Event 2018 as well as win yourself a specially minted unobtanium geocoin. The difference this year is that you don’t have to wait until the actual event to purchase your tickets in the draw. You can just go to our webstore, right now and buy them by following this link! That’s right, for just $2 per ticket, you can go into the draw to win the FTF prize of the Parkville 2018 MEGA as well as a specially minted unobtanium geocoin. The more entries you purchase, the greater the chance you have of winning and even if you don’t win, you still have the satisfaction of having helped a very worthwhile charity. How good is that?
It is at this point that we would like to thank our major sponsors. Geostuff, Cachly and geocaching.com have all helped us immensely and without their support, large scale events like this, which are free to attend, just would not be possible.
Speaking of sponsors, one of our major sponsors, Geostuff, is the place to go if you want to get the official “The Parkville Event 2018” t-shirts. Geostuff is the only place that you can go to get these t-shirts and they are available for pre-order right now. Available in men’s, women’s and kids sizes, the t-shirts display our mascot, Fern in his little zoo-keeper uniform and are available with customisation to include your team name and tracking codes if you wish. You can check these out and purchase them by following this link. Note: All orders are pre-orders for either delivery or pick up at the store when stock arrives or for pick up at The Parkville Event 2018 on the weekend of the event.
And finally we have our highlighted cache or caches for this fortnight and this one is for those people who like to hunt out geocaches with lots of favourite points. This traditional cache is 4.3 kilometres away from the Parkville MEGA event and is easily accessible by public transport. It currently has the most favourite points of any cache in Australia and continues to receive favourite points all the time. With 273 favourite points (at the time of writing), this week’s highlighted cache is by gmj3191 and it is Ununoctium (GC4PXX8). Another “must do” cache within 12 kilometres of The Parkville Event, 2018.
The Parkville Event organizing committee would like to thank you all for your continued support and we will continue working hard all year to put on the best MEGA event possible in November, 2018.
