Geocaching Victoria now has a fine tradition of fielding a number of walking teams each year for the Melbourne Oxfam Trailwalker event. Geocaching Victoria has big plans for Oxfam in 2019 and we’d like to get as many geocachers on board in whatever capacity to help us achieve these plans. So this year we are not only calling on walkers for the 100 kilometre event, but also the shorter 50 kilometre event too. Also, if even the 50 kilometre event seems too daunting for you, we also need people to man the many support crews which help these walkers achieve these goals.
So if you’ve ever thought that you’d like to be involved in this great event that sees Geocaching Victoria raise thousands of dollars every year for a very worthwhile charity, this is your chance. The event will most likely be run from the 12th of April to the 14th of April 2019, so we have plenty of planning time. As we do every year we will try and group people who have similar distance and goal times together as teams and attempt to have at least one experienced person who has been there before in each team. We plan to run numerous events throughout the year to get people together and walk different sections of the course to familiarise everybody with it and maybe put on a BBQ and raise some funds for the charity too. We are fortunate now to also have a reasonably large group of people in our community who have done the Melbourne Trailwalker event before and they are all more than willing to pass on the expertise to those attempting it for the first time, so the whole experience is not quite so daunting.
Official Oxfam registrations won’t open for a couple for months still, but we have decided to start at least trying to put teams together now in readiness. If you are interested in either walking the 50 or 100 kilometre course or putting your hand up to be a member of one of the support crews or even volunteering for Oxfam as a helper behind the scenes at the checkpoints, you can fill in the below form to register your interest. If you would like to walk with someone else in particular, or be a support crew for someone else in particular, you can mention them on the registration form and we will make sure you get to be together.
Geocaching Victoria would like to thank all the previous walkers and support crew over the past few years. The Geocaching Victoria Oxfam Community is a very special entity that has continued to grow in strength and many long lasting friendships have been born through the hardships on the trail and from the amazing support delivered by the support crews. We look forward to continuing this tradition in 2019.
