An Evening Chat with ABC’s David Astle and GVI’s President Jo Cox (aka heymissjo)

David Astle is a well loved author, radio presenter, crossword maker and a self proclaimed word nerd. You may have seen him on SBS’s Letters and Numbers, or perhaps completed one of his crosswords as the author of both the Age and Herald Sun puzzles.

On a recent hike in Yackandandah, David stumbled across a group of cachers fossicking around in the bush. This both excited and interigued him and after chatting to the group, he decided it was time to learn more about this crazy game we know as geocaching.

Last night, Geocaching Victoria’s President Jo Cox, was a guest on his ABC ‘Evenings with David Astle’ radio program. This was a great opportuinity to promote our great game and share on mainstream media. We hope you enjoy the interview.

Where is the Trackable Code?

For our March Geocaching Victoria competition we are doing something a little different….. we have hidden a trackable code on our website and your job is to find it and “discover it!”

In the past month, we have done a make-over on our website and have added lots of new content and photos. We really wanted to create on on-line experience with our website that catered for everyone – a place for new geocachers to come and learn tips and tricks on how to grow their geo-senses, improve their puzzle skills but also learn about other facets of the game. We want to also attract the seasoned geocachers to return to keep up to date with local geo-news and events in their area.

A special thank you must go to our amazing Victorian geocacing community, who when we put out the call for you to share your photos – you over delivered! The incredible volume of photos we received of your caching adventures, your creative finds and the breathtaking cache locations were too good not to share. We have included as many as we were able. We hope you enjoy the new website. Please do let us know if there are other things that you would like to see added.

OH! And getting back to the competition… search through the new website, find the trackable code and discover it. Everyone who discovers the trackable will go into a draw at the end of the month for a special geo-prize. Just one ask – when you find it – please don’t share online, or in forums, where and how you found the code… that just ruins the fun. Happy hunting all!

A new logo for Geocaching Victoria

Geocaching Victoria Logo (FC) logomarkBJust a very quick announcement to show off our brand new logo!  We hope you all like it, because we absolutely love it!  Those of you who are more observant had probably already seen it as it’s been on the Facebook Page for a few days now and even on our website.  The new logo should start appearing on merchandise, coins and pathtags very soon.  Tell us in the comments what you think of our new logo…

A NEW name, a NEW website and a NEW MEGA!

So the Alexandra MEGA is over and what a fantastic time we have all had.  That now completes the third successful MEGA event held by Geocaching Melbourne in as many years.  So what to do next?  That’s right, let’s jump back in a do it all over again!  But this time, we’re taking the road-show to the city!

First thing’s first though.

We felt it was about time for a change of name as we have kind of outgrown the term “Geocaching Melbourne”, so we asked the community for their input and after a reasonably lengthy discussion and survey polling the people who geocache in Victoria, we have arrived at our new name and that will be “Geocaching Victoria”.

So what does that mean?  Well it means a brand new and completely redesigned website which has just been launched.  You can find that at this address →

It also means a name change for our Facebook page and our GC account, but don’t worry, it still the same team behind the scenes working tirelessly to enhance the geocaching experience of people in Victoria and those visiting Victoria.  The committee behind the new Geocaching Victoria Inc is…

  • Day Gowland (day1976) – President
  • Louise Sullivan (LouiseAnn) – Vice President
  • Bernie Hollaway (BernieH) – Treasurer
  • Adriaan Homburg (ahomburg) – Secretary
  • Karen Ashford (carkisser) – Committee Member
  • Lorraine Sleep-Ogilvie (The Tritonz) – Committee Member
  • Peter Taurins (caught at work) – Committee Member

The committee looks forward to working on many different geocaching projects over the next year and in the years to come.

But wait, did I mention before something about the next MEGA moving to the city?

That’s right!  We would like to introduce you to the next MEGA event in the state of Victoria, The Parkville Event 2018.  You can follow this link and log your Will Attend now →

Located smack bang in the middle of the city of Melbourne, the Parkville event will be a two day event held over the weekend of the 17th and 18th of November 2018.  There is limited accommodation available which you can purchase right now.  The event t-shirts are being done through geostuff again and should be available for pre-purchase very soon.  The geocoins and pathtags are designed and are also available for pre purchase now.  There is even a rough event schedule and site map and a FAQ section completed on our brand new website.  There are plenty of exciting things planned for this event so to keep on top of it all, you need to stay tuned.  All further notifications regarding The Parkville Event, 2018 will be made through our new website, so make sure you subscribe to our blog and everything else at the new website →

The Parkville Event, like all our events will be absolutely FREE to attend with no registration fees required to be paid.

The Parkville Event committee consists of the following individuals who will be responsible for overseeing this MEGA event…

  • Louise Sullivan (LouiseAnn)
  • Karen Ashford (carkisser)
  • Day Gowland (day 1976)
  • David Fowler (Earthbound Chief)
  • Adriaan Homburg (ahomburg)

The Parkville Committee look forward to working on this exciting new project and delivering a MEGA that will take the next step in BIG geocaching events in Australia.

Website updates

Obviously this website is rather new and we are still working hard at creating content.  We have added quite a few FAQ‘s and are currently in the process of producing How to… guides.  If you want us to over a particular topic please contact us with the Feedback form above or via email to

More pages will be added as we go along, particularly if they are requested.  We will also be sure to keep you the loop with developments of the Massive Melbourne Event.
