Surf Coast Event – May update

I know we’ve been a bit quiet, but have we got news for you!  Not only did the Surf Coast 2016 event get officially changed over to a Mega Event, but we have all the great news below.

Game: Victorian Geocaching Tournament

Last year we educated and informed you, this year we want to entertain you! We had a lot of really great feedback from the survey after the last event and we have listened.  You wanted more social activities, more family friendly activities, more caches and more games.  We have tried to combine all these things with some friendly rivalry, fun challenges and of course  some geocaching.  We want you to team up with your geocaching buddies, register your team and join in the fun on Saturday for the Victorian Geocaching Tournament.  More information is here.

Schedule

Whilst we are still fleshing out the details of the sessions that will be running on the Sunday, here is a schedule for the weekend, so you can get planing.

The Great Ocean Road – Did you know?

There is a lot of history down on the Surf Coast, as well as lots of caches and a big event later in the year.  I learnt a few things about the Great Ocean Road today.  Even though I have lived in Victoria all my life, I didn’t know these things, so I thought I would share them with you.

Did you know – History

  • The Great Ocean Road was surveyed in 1918
  • It was built from 1919 – 1932 (13 years!)
  • It was built be returned soldiers from World War 1
  • The Great Ocean Road is dedicated to soldiers killed during World War 1 and,
  • the road is the world’s largest war memorial
  • The original name as going to be South Coast Road
  • Prior to the road being built, most of the towns could only be accessed by sea

Did you know – Numbers

  • Running from Torquay just out side Warnambool, the road is 244km long
  • 3000 men worked to construct the road
  • progress was around 3km per month
  • Built by a private company, the road cost £81,000
  • Workers were paid 10 shillings and sixpence per day
  • It was a toll road until 2 October 1936
  • Tolls were two shillings for cars, and 10 shillings for wagons with more than two horses

Upcoming promotional events

Like last year, the Surf Cost Event team and Geocaching Melbourne will be tripping all over Victoria to promote our event.  Since last year, geocaching.com have introduced some more new rules meaning our promotional events may be a little hard to recognise.  Here is a link to a list of them.  Remember these events are new and old cachers, we want everyone to get the most out of the Surf Coast Event in November.  So if it’s your first or your 5th Mega event, you should enjoy yourself.

In addition we will be giving away an unobtanium GOLD Melbourne Event geocoin to a lucky attendee of each of the BBQ events. Be there or miss out!!

We will have our left over Fern Pathtags available for Fern trades only if you have an incomplete set of Pathtags from the Melbourne Event

It doesn’t matter whether you’re caching since yesterday or for 15 years. It’s all about bringing the community together, making new friends and catch up with the old ones. Without you this wouldn’t be possible.
