Celebrating Victoria’s Best: 2024 Victorian Cache of the Year Awards

On Saturday night, the geocaching community came together at the Hampton RSL to celebrate the Victorian Cache of the Year Awards for 2024. It was standing room only as a packed house gathered to recognise the incredible caches and dedicated cache owners who make geocaching in Victoria so special.

Between dinner and a lively round of trivia, the winners of this year’s awards were revealed. Each category celebrated the creativity, effort and passion that goes into hiding and maintaining some of the best caches across the state. From epic constructions, to stunning locations and challenging adventures, the 2024 nominees showcased the diversity and imagination that makes our community shine.

Neville’s News – Update 1 – Sep 2025

G’day everyone – Neville the Devil here, your mischievous mascot with the inside scoop on the Tassie Event!

The event subcommittee has been busy at planning meetings and things are shaping up to be one ripper of a weekend. The team has been meeting every couple of weeks, ticking off activities, polishing up logistics, and making sure everything runs smoother than a devil on the prowl.

We are thrilled to announce that we have been awarded a grant to help bring our exciting adventure to life in beautiful Tasmania! Geocaching Victoria – the Tassie Event is supported by the Tasmanian Government through Events Tasmania, and we are incredibly grateful for their commitment to regional events that foster tourism and connection. With this backing, we’re set to deliver an event that not only celebrates the joy of geocaching but also contributes to the local economy and promotes Tassie’s incredible natural treasures.

Tasmanian Government Logo

We’ve already locked in some brilliant Sponsors and Supporters. One of our major sponsors is Budget Car and Truck Rental with a special discount offer for car rental. For details, terms and conditions see our website. Keep your eyes on the website, because I’ll be spilling the beans on more as soon as I can!

We’re also reaching out to connect with the local community around Sorell, and we’d love your support. If you’re a local business or keen community member, or if you know someone who wants to join the fun, now’s the time to get in touch. Partnerships, resources, knowledge – it all helps me and my human friends pull this off.

Planning is well underway for placing new caches across the state to support this event and our wonderful state. There are puzzles, earthcaches, geoart and more planned, with a theme of Tasmanian Flora and Fauna. The more people hiding caches the better, so reach out if you would like to be involved, get in touch.

Oh – and in case you missed it… I’ve already been out and about as the official Tassie Event mascot. Keep your eyes peeled – you never know where I might pop up next!

Thanks for being part of the journey. We can’t wait to bring you more updates in the future. Watch this space – or come stir up the conversation with me on Facebook.

Parking

Enjoy free, unrestricted parking at the rear of the Global Learning Centre (entry via Brook St) on both Saturday and Sunday. We have agreed with Hume City Council that parking inspectors will not enforce the 2P and 3P areas that are within the designated OFF STREET Global Learning Centre Carpark accessed from Brook St (Sat & Sun Only). Additional parking is also available along Macedon Street at the front of the Global Learning Centre and on Brook St at the rear, however parking restrictions WILL apply according to the signs in these and all other parking areas in Sunbury, so be sure to check the signs before leaving your car.

Disabled parking is available in the main car park off Brook Street as well as along Macedon Street (Macedon Street parking requires use of stairs or lift access).

There is limited parking at the Sunbury Memorial Hall (Home of the GPS Adventure Maze and some gadget caches). We therefore recommend parking at the Global Learning Centre where possible and walking the short 200m between the two venues.

Raffles

As part of engaging with the local community at each of our Mega and Block Party events, we nominate a local charity to be the beneficiary of the raffle sales from our FTF and much loved Maccamob hamper raffle. We are thrilled to have maccamob’s generous hamper donation for yet another year – Thank you Mary and David.

This year we are pleased to support the Sunbury Neighbourhood Kitchen, who are a not for profit, entirely volunteer run organisation (just like us!). They help feed locals in need and are aiming to provide over 2,500 meals this year. With your support, we are delighted to help them achieve this goal. A representative from Sunbury Neighbourhood Kitchen will be at the farewell event and tickets for the raffles will be on sale at the Global Learning Centre throughout the event.

We Can’t Wait To See You!

Don’t miss this epic geocaching celebration! If you haven’t already, log your “Will Attend” and start planning your Sunbury Block Party adventure today.

The St Arnaud Event – 1 week to go!

Welcome to The St Arnaud Event update. Can you believe there is only 1 WEEK TO GO? The committee are working behind the scenes to bring you the best MEGA event we can – all for FREE! Remember to REGISTER HERE by logging a “Will Attend” as this year we will be crossing off names at the event to ensure everyone who registered early gets their FREE gift.

It’s also important that you log your “will attend” on any other events you plan to attend. At the Saturday Night event we are providing each attendee with a Roast Beef Roll but if you haven’t logged a “will attend” here you might miss out! Rotary will also be selling sausages so bring a chair and some loose change!

Check out the full Schedule so you can plan your weekend.

Second of the Lab Caches

The second of the Lab Caches will be released in just a few days time on Monday November 11th and this Lab will close on Sunday November 24th. That means you can do them pre or post Mega if you are coming for longer than the weekend. The second tour is a Coffee, Cake and Fast Food Tour of St Arnaud Lab Adventure where you can discover some fantastic little eateries around the town we are calling home for the weekend. There is no need to enter the shop to find the code word but we do encourage you to spend some money and support this lovely little town.

If you’ve never done a Lab Cache before or haven’t done one since last year you will need to make sure you download the “Adventure Lab” app onto a mobile device. Simply download and login with your geocaching account and you will be good to go! Remember Lab Caches are now logged live on the spot through this app so you must be within range of the location to claim the smiley. They cannot be done through the regular geocaching app.

Adventure-lab-caches

Apps

Speaking of Apps you may want to download a few others in preparation for your trip to St Arnaud this year. We recommend:

  • The Geocaching App (otherwise how will you find all those hundreds of caches that are around?)
  • The Adventure Lab App (to do all the Lab Caches mentioned above – plus a heads up another two will be released Saturday morning so that’s 4 Adventures totalling 40 Lab Caches)
  • The Wherigo App (there are some Play Anywhere Wherigos around the town which you can do now from home and also one that will have you doing laps of the Main St)
  • YouTube App (this might come in handy for some Lab Caches which are released Saturday morning)
  •  Metaverse App (there is an Augmented Reality Cache GC7Z1Z2 in town if you are keen for something different)

Food, Glorious Food

The Rotary Club of St Arnaud will be selling food across the weekend. This includes Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings (bacon and egg rolls), lunch on Saturday and Sunday (sausages and vegie burgers) and dinner on the Saturday night (sausages in addition to the supplied roast beef roll). Please bring plenty of loose change to support a worthy organisation.

We will also have a water refill station on site so remember to BYO a drink bottle!

rotary

Wristbands

The Saturday Night dinner has been ordered and we will be printing names and ticking people off the list who have registered to come. If you are one of these people you will need to head into the MEGA shed during Saturday to get your wristband so you can get a yummy beef roll.

Online Orders & Merchandise

Online orders of coins, pathtags, FTF raffle and other merchandise will soon be closed so jump online and pre-order for collection from the Geocaching Victoria Shop. Items are selling out so get in quickly to avoid disappointment.

St A 5 set

Fun & Games

Like most other Victorian MEGA Events that have gone before us we are continuing on with the tradition of having a “few games” run throughout the weekend. Some forms will be handout out at registration so to be in with a chance of winning – you need to grab the forms and get hunting! The following games are on offer:

  1. Social Bingo – fill the WHOLE sheet.
  2. Far & Wide Game – fill in a LINE with the specific stamps allocated in the cache. The more lines you fill the more chances you get to win.
  3. Letterbox Game – find all FIVE new Letterbox caches (released this week) and stamp with the special GVI stamps.
  4. Receipts Game – collect any receipts from when you shop in St Arnaud in the week prior and post the Mega and pop your caching name and a mobile number on the back.

Sponsorship

It’s thanks to amazing supporters that make a MEGA event possible. This includes GeoStuff who will be on site during the Mega. We’ve also had donations from our mates in South Australia who are organising a MEGA event there – GeoVenture2020, Caching SuppliesSssafe and Sistema so a big thanks to them too. It’s also important to note that this event isn’t possible without the support of the Northern Grampians Shire Council so thank you NGS – your support in invaluable! And we can’t forget the amazing support from PathTags and Geocaching HQ   who help to make this dream a reality! Thanks guys!
