What do weeding, nominations and a sausage sizzle all have in common?

Answer – They are all part of the Geocaching Victoria events being held on 21 May 2023 at Edwardes Lake Park in Reservoir.

  • GCA69WH – Edwardes Lake Park CITO – 11:30 – 12:30
  • GCA69WK – Cache of the Year Award Nominations & Volunteer Week BBQ – 1:00 – 2:30

Come and join the activities and log your will attend for either or both events. See below for more details:

Edwardes Lake Park – Lakeside weeding – CITO – GCA69WH – 11:30am

Come and help the Friends of Edwardes Lake at this CITO. Working to preserve, restore and care for the ecosystem of Edwardes Lake and surrounds, we will be joining their team to help weed and maintain an area of the park that is being restored. It is also the first CITO in the Darebin LGA for 5 years. You might even get a chance to say hello to Kevin and Mabel, the resident lake swans.

National Volunteer Week Sausage Sizzle – GCA69WK – 1:00pm

National Volunteer Week is a chance to celebrate and recognise the vital work of volunteers. Geocaching Victoria and all of its events and activities are only possible thanks to the many, many volunteers who donate their time and energy in support of the geocaching community.

Whether it be helping to run a Mega, working on the GPS Adventure Maze, contributing to a GeoTour, selling sausages at a Bunnings BBQ or helping out at many other activities, volunteers are the lifeblood of all that we do.

As part of Volunteer Week we will be hosting a free sausage sizzle and get together. Be sure to log your will attend and include the number of people in your team so that we can be sure to cater for you.

2022 Cache of the Year Award Nomination Announcements – GCA69WK – 1:30pm

There is less than a week left to nominate your favourite Victorian cache in the 2022 awards. We are looking forward to tallying the results and announcing all of the amazing nominees at this event.

If you are still yet to nominate, you can submit your favourite 2022 cache nomination HERE.

Finding some of the nominee caches will also help with the May HQ souvenir challenge!

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday 21 May at the CITO and Volunteer/Nomination events.

PSSSTTTTTTT!!! Did you hear?

With the Mega only 172 days away, we thought it was time to schedule some more MEGA lead up events!

Make sure to check the details on our Mega page and if you haven’t yet registered your interest for the Mega GC8EW40 in November, you can do that too!

GVI Updates

GVI is expanding the team, to enable us to better meet the needs of the community.

We welcome aboard Donna Moore (Jaktembo) and Rod Lyon (n0w0rries) as affiliate members, and thank them for the contributions they will be making to the team.

Donna has been tasked with a new role, Membership Coordinator. We’ve talked many times over years about having some form of membership, but without having someone tasked solely with the task, we were just floundering. Donna will look at other community groups and the different forms of membership that they have. Donna will then present the GVI Committee with two or three options to discuss and consider. Once the Committee has made some decisions, Donna will then progress with putting something together that we can present to the community at large and then put into practice.

Rod is our brand spanking new CITO Coordinator. Many of you are already aware that we have a goal of one CITO per month, somewhere in Victoria. Unfortunately, it’s proved to be a bigger job than we realised, and coupled with the time required for us to organise and run Mega’s, work in our own jobs, spend time with family and hopefully do our own caching, it was just impossible. A decision was made to appoint someone to fulfill that role for us, and lucky for us and for the wider community, Rod has agreed and is already enthusiastically working on upcoming events.

We can’t wait to work closely with both in their new roles!

On another note, Louise is having some time out. Louise is taking a 3 month sabbatical (with a potential for this being extended), and her committee spot will be temporarily taken up by Donna Moore. During this time, Louise remains Vice President, and will be available for that role if required. Donna will take on the day to day jobs that Louise was managing, and will help to keep things humming along.

The St Arnaud Event – only a few days to go!

Welcome to The St Arnaud Event update. Can you believe there are ONLY A FEW DAYS TO GO?

It is important that you log your “will attend” on any events you plan to attend so we can plan and cater accordingly. Check out the full Schedule so you can plan your weekend.

Event Updates

FRIDAY NIGHT: Due the overwhelming number expected on Friday night the Sports Club is putting on a buffet meal (one plate only – no second helping) at $19 per adult and $13 per child.

This will consist of Salt & Pepper Calamari, Honey Chicken, Fried Dim Sims, Beef and Black Bean, Fried Rice, Steamed Rice, Mixed Vegetables, Noodles, Chicken Schnitzel and Chips.

Meals can also be ordered from a reduced menu but this will take considerably longer.

Please be patient as they deal with such a huge influx of people and if you have eaten please ensure others can have your seat when their meal is ready. Your patience and understanding is appreciated.

FRIDAY CITO: Please bring some secateurs if you have them to help with this CITO.

SATURDAY CITO: Due to recent rains the location of the Saturday CITO has been changed. If you have saved this one offline please update so you end up in the correct location!

Some statistics (so far…)

Did you know that there are:

  • 457 Will Attendsstats
  • 707 Attendees
  • 9 countries
  • Representatives from all states and territories

Receipts game

We know that many of you are already enjoying the caches around St Arnaud. Don’t forget we are collecting receipts for the week pre and post Mega so we can see the economic impact an event like Geocaching can have for a small town.   Keep your receipts and bring them to the Mega Site on Saturday.

Sponsorship

It’s thanks to amazing supporters that make a MEGA event possible. This includes GeoStuff who will be on site during the Mega. We’ve also had donations from our mates in South Australia who are organising a MEGA event there – GeoVenture2020, Caching SuppliesSssafe and Sistema so a big thanks to them too. It’s also important to note that this event isn’t possible without the support of the Northern Grampians Shire Council so thank you NGS – your support is invaluable! And we can’t forget the amazing support from PathTags and Geocaching HQ   who help to make this dream a reality! Thanks guys!
