Walks in the Warby

So, you’ve marked your calendars and booked your camping for The Wangaratta Event. What are you going to do when you get there?

Why don’t you check out the nearby Warby-Ovens National Park?

While the Ovens River section of the park has some great fishing spots, the Warby Range features beautiful forest and many walking and mountain bike trails. And they’re peppered liberally with close-to-the-track caches! What more could you want?

If you’re after a long hike, then the Ridge Track is the one for you. Starting from Taminick Stile and ending at the Mt Glenrowan Lookout it features stunning views over the Ovens and King Valley. There is a small section that is fairly steep, but most of it is a moderate walk. Our featured cache here is “Mad Dan’s Lookout” (GC2HF7B), so named after the legend that Dan Morgan (and also the Kelly gang) camped there to avoid the police.

Something more moderate is the Friends Track, which circles from Wenham’s Camp out to the Kwat Kwat Lookout and back (For directions to the lookout, checkout this cache here!) This is a Grade 3 walk with some steep sections and will take about 2 hours to do the 4.6 km. It’s also a mountain biking track, so watch out for cyclists.

Another shorter walk is the Pine Gully Falls and Nature walk – this is still a little steep for some but it’s only a 2 km round trip with a lovely hidden picnic ground on the way! Our featured cache here is “Pine Gully Falls & Nature Walk” (GC2HF83) which will lead you right there. If there has been recent rain you can even see the Falls.

If you’d like something somewhere in the middle, try the Warby Falls Heritage Trail. While it is a Grade 4 walk the trade off is that it ends up at the Taminick Winery, so you can rest up for the walk back… Or persuade a friend to pick you up 🙂

Whatever you choose, we look forward to hearing your stories next November (only 54 weeks to go!) See you there!

Camping at Wangaratta!

Have you booked your camping at the Wangaratta Showgrounds yet?

As you can see from this post, there are two options available – both situated alongside the beautiful Ovens River. Click here to book your choice in either the Rodeo Ground or the Ovens Ground. Both powered and unpowered sites are available.

As an added bonus for the 2021 Event, you can choose your site when you book. No more first at the campsite best dressed! (Although you’ll want to book now to get prime position!)

Camping at the Showgrounds not your thing? Want to extend your stay? Check out the Visit Wangaratta website for more great options, such as B&Bs, hotels, Motels and even some apartment stays. There are so many lovely places to stay – both in Wangaratta itself and in the surrounding areas. Why not make a week of it and visit them all! (You may need a few weeks, actually…)

We’re looking forward to see you all! Go and make your bookings now!

Wonderful Wangaratta

Situated in the beautiful Ovens Valley, the City of Wangaratta straddles both banks of the Ovens River. It is home to just over 20,000 people and, of course, some great caches!

Wangaratta is the gateway to amazing bushland and some fabulous parks. Of particular interest is The Bush Tucker Garden as well as many smaller playgrounds and recreational areas. The Ovens River provides a meandering ribbon of green land through the city – which means more parks and outdoor areas for you to enjoy. The Warby-Ovens National Park is just a short drive or cycle away and has lots of interesting walks and treks for varying abilities.

Within the city there are some great landmarks and historical buildings including the Holy Trinity Cathedral, The Art Gallery and the Memorial Gardens. Half-day walking tours are run from the Information Centre and provide a great overview of the rich history of the city.

Once you have taken in the city and all its marvels (including the coffee, did I mention that there’s coffee?) then you’re ready to branch out to the surrounding areas.

Explore exciting Bushranger history with the Kelly Gang at Glenrowan, or find hidden pockets of wilderness along the many cycling trails.

If cycling and walking’s not really your style, why not visit some of the many wineries, craft breweries and food producers in the region? (You’ll need some cheese to go with all that wine 🙂 )

So much to explore and engage the senses in this fabulous gem in the North East. Be careful – you might even forget to cache! 🙂
